**Quick Answer**

For professional portrait retouching, Retouch4me is the strongest pick, at about $145 per plug-in for Photoshop. YouCam Online Editor is the easier browser tool and starts with 5 free credits. PhotoRoom suits product photos, Topaz Photo AI recovers detail, and Remini restores old face photos.

## Pick the tool by the job, not by the brand

"AI photo retouching" covers three different jobs. Skin and portrait cleanup is one. Quick fixes to everyday photos is another. Rescuing a weak or damaged photo is the third.

The five tools below are each built for one of those jobs. This guide matches them to the job instead of giving them one blended score, because a Photoshop plug-in and a phone app are not competing for the same customer.

| Tool | Best job | Where it runs | Free start | Cost signal |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Retouch4me | Professional skin retouching | Photoshop plug-ins, free Arams app | Free tools and demos | Mostly $145 per plug-in |
| YouCam Online Editor | Quick browser fixes | Browser | 5 free credits, no card | Credits; plan table not confirmed |
| PhotoRoom | Product photos | Web and app | Free, watermarked | From $7.50/month (annual) |
| Topaz Photo AI | Detail recovery and sharpening | Desktop | None found | About $39/month, subscription only |
| Remini | Old and blurry face photos | Mobile-first app | Limited daily credits, ads | From $6.99/week |

### How this guide was researched

AI Nexus did not run its own retouching tests for this guide. It is a research synthesis. Facts come from each vendor's official pages and from the independent reviews cited on our tool pages.

Retouch4me store prices were read on 14 October 2026. YouCam's pricing is left out on purpose, because we could not find a current official plan table. PhotoRoom, Topaz and Remini figures come from our July 2026 check in the [image upscaler guide](/blog/best-ai-photo-upscaler-tools-2026/), so confirm them before you pay.

## Retouch4me: the pick for professional skin retouching

Retouch4me sells AI retouching plug-ins built around Photoshop. Each plug-in handles one job. Heal removes blemishes, Skin Tone evens redness, Dodge & Burn smooths skin while keeping texture, and others cover stray hairs, eyes, teeth, fabric and studio backdrops.

Two free tools sit alongside the paid ones. A free Photoshop panel combines several functions, and the free Arams app handles culling and batch retouching, which lets you judge the workflow before spending anything.

The reason to choose it is natural-looking output. Fstoppers (April 2025) calls the results subtle but effective. LensVid (2023) found Heal the most effective plug-in and Dodge & Burn more natural than Photoshop's own skin-smoothing filter. Plug-ins work on layers, so you can mask or dial the effect back.

### What Retouch4me costs

Store prices are mostly $145 per plug-in. Dodge & Burn and Clean Backdrop are $179 each. Mask Anything is $29 and Lab, the colour-grading add-on, is $145. Many paid plug-ins have a Try Demo button, though the store page does not state the trial terms.

Fstoppers estimated about $500 for the four tools it considered essential, and reported perpetual licences with free updates. The store page we checked does not state licence terms, so confirm them, and confirm which host apps your version supports, before you buy.

### Where Retouch4me falls short

Cost is the main objection, and it is a real one. Five plug-ins run to several hundred dollars, so photographers who retouch rarely may never recover it.

Reviewers also found weak spots. LensVid found Clean Backdrop and Fabric too weak on bigger problems, and Fstoppers found Face Make can reshape faces strongly. It is also a Photoshop-centred product, so it is the wrong tool for casual users, for anyone who wants a subscription, and for anyone who wants an AI headshot generator.

## YouCam Online Editor: easy browser fixes with a small free start

YouCam Online Editor is a browser-based AI photo editor from Perfect Corp, so there is nothing to install. Per its own site, the toolset includes a Photo Enhancer that upscales to 4K, an Object Remover, background removal and change, Photo Repair for old photos, Colorize, Face Retouch, Face Reshape and an Image Extender.

New users get 5 free credits with no credit card. That is enough to judge the output on a few of your own photos, not to finish a project. The Photo Enhancer is listed for batches of up to 50 photos at once.

It fits casual users, social media creators and small online sellers who want quick fixes without learning layers and masks. It is not aimed at professionals who retouch in Photoshop, Lightroom or Capture One.

Advanced tools run on credits, which you buy individually or through a membership. We do not quote a monthly price, because we could not find a current official plan table and third-party listings disagree. Use the free credits first, then read the pricing page.

YouCam says the enhancer can sharpen detail but cannot recover a subject that was never in focus. It also says it does not train on your images without consent and deletes files after a short period. Both are the vendor's own statements.

## PhotoRoom: the pick for product photos

PhotoRoom answers a different question from the portrait tools. It is built to get a listing-ready product photo in one pass, with background removal, shadows, AI Fill and an Image Enhancer on every paid plan.

As of our July 2026 check, paid plans start at $7.50 a month on annual billing. The free plan works for testing, but it watermarks exports and blocks commercial use, so a real seller needs a paid tier. First-time upgraders get a 7-day trial on a paid plan.

It is not a skin retouching tool, and we would not use it to polish a portrait. For ecommerce sellers who also need more resolution, our [image upscaler comparison](/blog/best-ai-photo-upscaler-tools-2026/) covers PhotoRoom against four rivals in more depth.

## Topaz Photo AI: for detail recovery and sharpening

Topaz Photo AI is a desktop tool built around sharpening, noise reduction and upscaling. It is the one to look at when the photo is already a good composition but is soft, grainy or too small for the size you need.

The pricing is the catch. Topaz Labs discontinued perpetual licences in September 2025, so every product is now a subscription. As of our July 2026 check, Photo AI ran at roughly $39 a month, or about $199 a year, and we found no free tier.

That means you commit before you can test on your own files, so check for any trial on the Topaz site first. We have no affiliate relationship with Topaz, and the link below goes to its official page.

## Remini: for old and blurry face photos

Remini is a mobile-first app, built to work on one photo at a time. Its face restoration and colourization models are tuned for rescuing an old, blurry or damaged family photo, which makes it the quickest option here for that one job.

As of July 2026, the free tier gave limited daily credits with ads and a watermark. Paid pricing ran $6.99 a week for Personal and $9.99 a week for Business. The weekly framing makes it the dearest tool here for ongoing use, so it suits a handful of important photos better than regular work.

Results can over-smooth skin texture or tone, and there is no batch processing or fine control over strength. Treat it as a rescue tool. We have no affiliate relationship with Remini.

## Which tool should you choose?

- **Choose Retouch4me** if you retouch portraits in Photoshop and want natural skin results. Start with the free panel and one demo, then buy only the plug-in that fixes your most repeated problem.

- **Choose YouCam Online Editor** if you want quick fixes in a browser and no learning curve. Spend the 5 free credits on your own photos before you consider paying.

- **Choose PhotoRoom** if the photos are products. **Choose Topaz Photo AI** if a good shot is too soft or small. **Choose Remini** if a face in an old photo is the whole point.

If you want a professional-looking portrait without a camera session, a dedicated headshot generator is a different tool again. See our [best AI headshot tools guide](/blog/best-ai-headshot-tools-linkedin-2026/) for that route.

## A practical workflow: how the tools fit together

These tools are not mutually exclusive. Some people combine two of them, and the order matters more than the brand.

### For a portrait or wedding set

Fix the technical problems first, then retouch. If a frame is soft or noisy, sharpen or denoise it before any skin work, because retouching tools can exaggerate noise they were not built to handle.

Then apply skin retouching on a separate layer, starting with the lowest effective strength. Judge the result at full size, and compare it with the original before exporting. A plug-in that looks natural on one face can look plastic on another.

### For a small online shop

Product photos need clean backgrounds and consistent framing far more than skin work. Run the set through a product tool such as PhotoRoom first, then check edges, shadows and any printed text on labels.

If the source photos are small, upscale before you upload, and zoom in on logos and lettering. Marketplace buyers notice a garbled label faster than a slightly soft edge.

### For a family archive

Scan prints at the highest resolution your scanner offers, and keep the untouched scan. Restore a copy, not the original. A restoration app can invent plausible detail in a face, so show the result to someone who knew the person before you share it widely.

In all three cases, spend the free credits, demos or free tools first. The best predictor of whether a tool is worth paying for is how it handles your own worst photo, not the vendor's best sample.

## What AI retouching cannot fix

No tool here can recover a subject that was never in focus. AI adds plausible detail, and on faces or text that detail can be wrong, so zoom in on eyes, teeth, logos and lettering before you export.

Over-processing is the other risk. Heavy smoothing removes skin texture, and shape-changing tools can alter how a person looks. Work on a copy, keep the original, and compare before and after at full size.

## Checklist before you pay

- Test the free credits, demos or free tools on your own photos, not the sample images.

- Confirm the licence terms, the supported apps and whether updates are included.

- Read the privacy policy before you upload client or personal photos.

- Check the current price on the vendor's page, because the figures here are dated.

- Set a calendar reminder before any trial ends, and check how to cancel.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is the best AI tool for retouching skin in portraits?

Retouch4me is the strongest fit for professional skin retouching. It sells Photoshop plug-ins that each handle one job, such as blemishes, skin tone or stray hairs, and reviewers at Fstoppers and LensVid describe the results as natural. Most plug-ins cost about $145 each, so test the demos before you buy.

### Is there a free AI photo retouching tool?

Partly. Retouch4me offers free tools, including a Photoshop panel and the Arams app for culling and batch work. YouCam Online Editor gives new users 5 free credits with no credit card. PhotoRoom and Remini have free tiers with limits, such as watermarks. None of these is unlimited, so treat them as trials.

### Can AI retouching fix a blurry photo?

Only to a point. A tool such as Topaz Photo AI or YouCam's Photo Enhancer can sharpen mild blur and add resolution, but YouCam itself says the enhancer cannot recover a subject that was never in focus. AI adds plausible detail rather than restoring what the camera missed, so check faces and text closely.

### Are Retouch4me plug-ins a one-time purchase or a subscription?

Fstoppers reported perpetual licences with free updates in April 2025, but the store page we checked in October 2026 does not state the licence terms. Confirm the licence, the host apps supported and any update policy at checkout. Prices have also moved since that review.

### Which tool is best for ecommerce product photos?

PhotoRoom. It bundles background removal, shadows and image enhancement in one workflow, with paid plans from $7.50 a month on annual billing as of July 2026. Retouch4me is a portrait tool and is the wrong choice for listing photos. Check the current plan table before you subscribe.

### Is it safe to upload personal photos to an online AI editor?

It depends on the vendor, so read the privacy policy first. YouCam says it does not train on your images without consent and deletes files after a short period, but that is the vendor's own statement. Avoid uploading sensitive or client photos to any online editor until you have read the terms.

### Which tool should a beginner start with?

YouCam Online Editor is the lowest-effort start, because it runs in a browser with nothing to install and gives 5 free credits. Beginners who want one clear result, such as a cleaner headshot, can also look at a dedicated headshot tool. Photoshop plug-ins suit people who already work in layers.

### Does AI retouching make people look fake?

It can if you push it. Fstoppers noted that Retouch4me's Face Make plug-in can reshape faces strongly, and heavy smoothing removes skin texture. Use the lowest effective strength, work on a separate layer where the tool allows it, and compare against the original before you export.
